Hi, we double checked the pattern and everything is correct.

Row 3 has a net decrease of 2 sts, row 5 a net increase of 2 sts, row 7 a net decrease of 2 sts and row 11 has a net increase of 2 sts.

It is common for lace rows to have varying amounts of sts in them. Keep an eye on your k2tog, ssk, and yo's and everything will work out in the end.

I have done several moderne log cabin afghans now and always have trouble with picking up the right number of stitches. I try to do one for one but sometimes the new rows stretch, sometimes they waffle. Does it matter whether the yarns you use are the same WPI? I have been doing them with scrap yarns and having fun. Kelley's podcast had an episode about picking up stitches - try listening to Episode #39, "Knit Up or Pick Up."

Matching your yarns closely will help prevent the stretching/waffling issue. Basically, if your yarns aren't knitting up at the same gauge, you'll have to pick up more (or fewer) stitches as you work around the log cabin square. If you're using yarns with different WPIs, you can also try changing your needle size to even out your gauge.

it would be, and I must say that I looked diligently in the book for the answer to the question about picking up and didn't find it. I found Knit Picks Admin suggestions very to the point and helpful. I intend to listen again to Kelley's podcast #39.

I recently purchased the Striped Baby Sweater, how difficult would it be to knit it in the round until the front neck shaping? I think the strips would be more uniform, and I also HATE sewing the sides together. Would it be a good thing to try, or am I just making more work for myself?

I really like your yarn and the value is fantastic, unfortunatly the last pattern I ordered had to be rewritten and I have not been able to start the cable waist cardiagan yet. I am looking forward to trying out the new Comfy yarn.

Thanks, Joann

Hi Joann, that pattern in particular would be pretty easy to convert to the round! Just be mindful of the repeats on the seed and moss stitch and you should be fine. For the sleeves, I'd recommend casting on one extra stitch on either side of the opening when you begin to knit flat; this will provide a selvedge. In fact, if you want, you could PU around the sleeve opening and knit the sleeve down in one piece as well - though it may not be as sturdy, it'll eliminate the seam there too!

Happy knitting :)

Thanks so much for you help, I am going to order the yarn today for the pattern. I thought I could knit this round but just wanted confirmation, it always makes me more confident. The pattern actually calls for picking up the sleeve stitches. I will let you know how it goes and if I need more help...Thank Joann

Hello,
I need help with a pattern that is in a book that I purchased through KnitPicks, along with the yarn to make it.
It is the Knitted Doctor's Bag, found in the book "Knit Two Together", which is co-authored by Traci Ullman.
This pattern features a herringbone motif that is over 16 rows. The problem is, when I knit it, it does not even resemble the photos in either the book or the knitpicks catalog! The pattern calls for "Manos Del Uruguay" wool, (which is a single-ply worsted weight) - using two strands. But KnitPicks suggested (and used for their photo) a bulky weight yarn.

Q1: So, I'm thinking I need to use just 1 strand of the bulky weight yarn. Correct?

Q2: To achieve the herringbone pattern, the pattern has you alternating knits & purls with slip 2 sts with yarn in back (wyib), and then on the other side slip 2 sts with yarn in front (wyif). This I understand just fine, but when I do it, the resulting pattern looks nothing like the photo that originally attracted me to this project! Do I need to pull those yarn carries tightly to the next knit or purl stitch? Or do I carry it so that it lies flat?

Has anyone tried this pattern? I would really appreciate your help! I have invested a fair amount of $ into this project, so I would really love it to turn out! I am a fairly experienced knitter, so I just don't know what I'm missing.

Many thanks!
~Miriam

Hi Miriam, as for Q1, yep, that's correct! For Q2 - do you have any photos of the work in progress? That would help me help you!

The only suggestions I have right now are to make sure your floats are on the RS of the work at all times and to turn it sideways to resemble the final bag! The floats should be firm, but flat.

Hope that helps a little - and if you have some photos, I'd love to see them :)

Thank you, thank you! I will gladly send you photos. Are you willing to send me your e-mail address so that I may do so? Or do I upload the photos to this site? (I'm new to this group, so I'm unfamiliar...)
I have turned the work sideways to evaluate it, and I have ensured that all of my 'floats' are on the right side of the work...maybe I'm just not far enough into the project to see the pattern develop, I don't know. I have made it through about 1 1/2 repeats of the motif.

Have you made the bag, or used the pattern?

Thanks SO much!
Miriam

Hello everybody,

I just wanted to ask anyone who's made Sally Melville's Einstein coat: Can I make it one size smaller to get a not so roomy fit? I'm a bit, ummm, busty, (42) but making a coat with a circumference of 54 inches (large) just seems huge. The rest of me is not "large!" Thanks!
