Hi there,

The red at the edges is pretty obvious; if you have enough blue yarn, you could easily substitute it wherever you see red. You's probably have enough of the lightest blue for at least the top and bottom bands; you may have to use a different color for the zipper opening, but you could make it work. Good luck!

"Knitting on Top of the World" by Nicky Epstein. A beautifully produced book and, excluding a few, grossly unattractive novice projects, inspirational. However, anything worth tackling is graded for either skilled or master knitters, skilled and master meaning the same thing in this case.

Have any of you tried to work the Victorian Fingerless Gloves pattern? It seems to have some problems, and while I'm waiting for a response from Knit Picks customer support, I thought I'd ask here. (1) The first row seems to end with 14 sts on the needle, but the chart shows 15 sts. (2) Row 2 starts with K2 and then the instruction to drop the 2nd loop of the double YO, but row 1 doesn't end that way; the double YO comes near the beginning of the row, not the end. (3) Rows 3-12 container "placeholders." What does that mean? Are those short rows, or will I simply have fewer sts on the needle by then, due to decreases?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to make these for my daughter's birthday (Dec. 22), and I'm stumped. I know I could pick an easier lacy wrist warmer pattern, but I especially like the look of these, and I know she will, too.

Just got off the phone with Nancy at KnitPicks, who very kindly talked me through the Victorian Fingerless Gloves pattern. As you might have guessed, I'm very inexperienced at reading charts, so I hadn't even realized that you read the RS rows right to left, but the WS rows left to right. OH! That does make a difference, she said sheepishly.

I didn't think of the chart readng tutorial. I should have pointed you in that direction. I guess there is way too much for any one person to know about knitting.

Thanks, Susan. After I got off the phone, it occurred to me that that would be a useful thing to have on the site. I assume there is one?

Yes there is one here.

Questions about Pattern Abbreviations

I'm working on the Victorian Fingerless Gloves and have come across some pattern abbreviations which aren't listed in the abbreviation table at the bottom of the pattern. The abbreviations are:
PM
M1L (make 1 left?)
M1R (make 1 right?)

It's the PM which is most confusing me. Any help?

PM = place marker.

M1L and M2R indicate which way the made stitch turns.

Oh, duh. Thanks, Susan!

I have in my shopping cart a book called Pipsqueak Knits by Jil Eaton. From the pages I could view on the KnitPicks website I found a beautiful bright red one piece hooded "snow suit" for a baby. This is my reason for buying the book - and I'd like very much to buy the yarn at the same time. Can you suggest the proper weight yarn? I'd also like to know approximately how much I'd need.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Once you have the book in hand, you'll find that the yarn recommendations (type and amount) are printed with the pattern. However, perhaps the problem is that you'd like to buy the yarn along with the book, online, and want to know ahead of time what you'll need. I would call KnitPicks customer service, because they should be able to look in a copy of the book and tell you the info over the phone.
