Yes... I don't believe in "coincidence" only Providence... all things happen for a purpose. Like your DSL modem suddenly deciding that KP was suspicious which caused you to post here and at Ravelry, which caused me to reply to them, which caused you to notice my blog post, which... ;-)
I need some advice about which sweater book or books I should purchase. I have received 3 EZs books but I would also like to get one which gives me options for various neck openings and with set in sleeves. I've ordered but will be returing the Twisted Sisters sweater book because there is not waist shaping and it has lots of dropped sleeves. I'm new to knitting - only worked on scarves and socks and wish to make a sweater for myself. The size is important - I have a larger top - 44 -with narrow shoulders - I don't want sweaters that will just hang I want some shaping.
Thanks for your advice.
The number one sweater book to get is "The Sweater Workshop"... and then join the Sweater Workshop Knitalong. :-)
If you work all the way, from the beginning including the Sampler, but the end, you will not only be knitting sweaters... you'll be designing your sweaters.
I just sent you a private message about my book recommendations, but the information is useful, so I'll post about it here as well.
I usually end up either designing my own sweater patterns or modifying commerical patterns to make them fit me exactly and also so that they can be knit seamlessly in the round. I'm going to recommend a few books in addition to everything by EZ and I'll explain why.
Maggie Righetti's "Sweater Design in Plain English"
This book really explains how to customize a pattern or create a pattern to fit your measurements. She explains the math that you need to do to create a pattern. She has excellent instructions on how to measure yourself. This book was published in maybe the 1970s or 1980s, so the photographs and her own patterns are out of fashion and dated, but the information inside the book is still top notch.
Pricilla Gibson-Roberts' "Knitting in the Old Way"
I recently bought this book and can't believe that I hadn't heard people recommending this book before. This is a big book that explains all of the traditional sweaters from all over the world, from Fair Isle sweaters, to Aran sweaters, to Cowichan sweaters, and a lot more. Her measurements are all based on Elizabeth Zimmermann's EPS, so it's a good companion to EZ books. But she really explains things like how to make different sorts of collars, how to decrease a stitch pattern into sleeve seams, etc.
Barbara Walker's "Knitting from the Top"
Everything by Barbara Walker is good (we don't sell most of her stitch dictionaries, but you should check those out). If you like knitting sweaters top down, this is the book to reference. If you have this book, you can basically turn any sweater pattern into a top down sweater. She does have some crazy stuff in this book too, such as reversible top town knitted pants, but her information about sweaters is great. Books by Wendy Bernard and Stephanie Japel also use top down techniques and feature more modern patterns but the information in Barbara Walker's book is the best.
Sorry for the really, really stupid question...but I can't seem to find how to add something to a wish list...nor how to find the wish list without googling "knitpicks wishlist". I've used the "save for later" button, but it doesn't stay anywhere once I've navigated away from the site.
Do you have an account? If you do, and you are signed into the account, it should save automatically. The wish list is contained inside your shopping cart. Hope that helps.
Hello
I just joined this community. I'm wondering if anyone has knit the bag that comes with this sampler. I assume it is knit in the round. How does the back look? The same as the front? are there perhaps steeks? ( Never worked with those) As a matter of fact I'm new to fair isle. I'm just finishing some fingerless gloves I designed myself. I'm now hooked on fair isle and thought this bag might be nice. Soooooo does anyone know how it is constructed.
Thank you much, Elke the Noob.
PS. I have really no Idea how or where to post, sigh
If you're talking about the Sipalu bag, you might want to try joining the knitalong that we're hosting. The members in that knitalong have been posting pictures of their projects and answer questions for each other.
Thank you
I was browsing around yesterday and did come across the Sipalu bag knit along. I saw some pictures of the work in progress. Looks kinda scary though. Sooo today I peeked again and I just love the bag.Maybe, just maybe I'll muster enough courage to give it a try
