I haven't done charted cables yet, but have completed several pair of socks with cables on both sides. The funny thing is that I had to make a chart to determine where my stitches were going - of course my chart was not like the charts you see in the knitting books, but showed each stitch and where the cable fit into the project. And yes, I used a spreadsheet to create the chart.

My first cables were a little clumsy at first, but it really is a logical process, and not a difficult one. The hand movements and positioning of the cable can be awkward at first.

LOL! I KNEW you used a spreadsheet! LOL!

It isn't hard, or difficult to follow at all... and the pattern has the option to use a chart &/or written directions. I'm using the written directions because I don't want to print anything out and I can track where I am in the directions by scrolling the screen on my laptop. But, I'm also referring to the chart for confirmation... and to get the feel of reading the chart. :-) I've also got a good photo of the front cable pattern which helps orient me to where I'm supposed to be going and it makes a lot of sense.

I just feel like I need an extra hand... or at least a couple extra fingers to juggle everything. LOL! I'm also working with a 3.5mm needle and DK yarn... it would be easier with worsted and 6mm needles! :-)

I've not done a whole lot yet and can tell my fingers are already figuring out how to manage it, so, I think by the time I've done them both, I won't worry much about cable projects in the future. :-) Very logical process, yes... clumsy, yes... fun... not quite yet but getting there. :-)
Does anyone know how to chart read?? I am trying so hard to knit the Victorian Spring Scarf here on KP. However it is a chart only. I was doing ok until they started a row with a grey box. That means NO stitch made. and How do I NOT do the first stitch of a row?
I thought I was intermediate in knitting but these charts drive me nutty!!
help anyone??
bless you,
grace

Grace,
I went through the same process... NO STITCH - meant nothing to me. When it says no stitch, just go on the the next stitch in the row. I'm not sure why they write the charts that way, but I think it is to keep the symmetry of the finished project... --S
I stand corrected on the question of needle size. The text does read" 4-#1 needles." Judging from some of the knitters' comments on the Knitalong, it appears that some prefer a size 2, due its ease of use.

I agree that "beginner" and "advanced" are completely subjective labels. I'm certain you would agree that there is a lot of territory spanning the abilities of the labels "novice knitter" and "advanced knitter." I think Knit Picks provides wonderful tutorials. Unfortunately, having access to view on-line tutorials is not always convenient or possible. It is very frustrating to "bite off more than you can chew" when a knitter gets way over her head in a project, and then not be able to get help on it. That's why I like to know what I'm getting into ahead of time, if possible.

As far as "denying yarn" (or any Knit Picks item) goes, I know that just wouldn't happen. I am certain that Knit Picks will happily sell yarn to anyone at any time, thank goodness!

Meanwhile, I will keep my fingers crossed that Mr. Foster will become a Knit Picks pattern in his own right.

I would like to see a chart for the lace in chart for Shawl Collar Peplum Cardigan.

It's almost impossible to knit without one.

I love ethnic textiles--especially fairisle--you have several, please keep up the great work!! I see that some of the for sale patterns come in printed form --please make that an available option for all of them? They are so much easier to read than what my printer turns out!! Thank you for great yarn, patterns, service and price!!

I have been looking all over for a pattern for a men's cardigan with shawl collar and drop sleeves. Found this picture of a ready made sweater, and that's what I want to knit, but I can't find anything that is much like it.
